What has been your career path so far?
Initially I had no idea what I wanted to do after university, but after falling into accountancy I realised it was a good fit. I joined Sayer Vincent in 2015 as a trainee, qualified as a chartered accountant in 2018 and have stayed with the firm since. I’m now a manager, looking after a diverse portfolio of charities and not for profit clients.
What do you enjoy about the charity sector?
I had done a few bits of charity fundraising when I was younger but now I’m completely hooked on the sector since working with so many amazing clients. I enjoy working with lots of different types of people, who all share a passion for what they do.
It’s really rewarding to provide financial support and to build relationships with my clients and to watch how they progress with the work that they do. I get a real thrill helping our clients achieve their mission.
What would you say are your key skills?
As well as my professional accountancy skills, I would like to think of myself as a people person. Often auditors are viewed in a stereotypical way, scary and serious! I try to be the opposite and make the process as enjoyable and fun as possible. I like to think of myself as a critical friend with a smile.
What makes you proud?
I like to get really involved in everything I do. I’m proud of the sector I’m servicing, the work my clients do and the help I can offer. I’m also proud of the work we do internally at Sayer Vincent and my contribution to this by being part of the firm’s technical group and data analytics committee.
Tell us something people may not know
At university I was into my rowing and in my first year won a Guinness World Record for the most electricity generated in 24 hours using a rowing machine. Unfortunately, this was short lived and has since been broken so can’t claim that I am still a record holder!
What do you get up to outside of work?
I love to run and try to book myself onto as many long distance and challenge events as possible. I also enjoy cooking, but I’m definitely not a natural at this!
